Mandera Bus attack We woke up early this morning to the grim news of yet another bus attack by suspected Al Shabaab at a place between Kotulo and Dimu locations in Mandera South. This is approximately 280 kms from Mandera town. There are reports of two fatalities and several injuries.
An attack was carried out on Mandera Governor's convoy. One of the vehicles in the Governor's convoy was burnt by the militia. The burnt car was among the two vehicles carrying a group of elders and police officers. The Friday morning attack is believed to have been well planned by the Al Shabaab militia. This is the fourth attempt on the Governor's life. The county government officials were on a field trip for public participation meetings. Several people are said to have been injured in the incident.
One person was killed and two others injured in a suspected terrorist attack in Mandera town on February 25,2015.The three men(whose identities were not revealed) were on their way headed to their homes when they met armed men believed to be Al shabaab members who sprayed them with bullets. The County Commissioner of the area said the attackers are believed to have crossed into the county from Somali's Bula Hawa. The fear that Alshabaab might be present in Mandera town has created tension among residents of this area.
Community members in Mandera held street protests to demand action from the government to enhance security. This as non-muslim members flee the town for fear of more attacks. The locals urged them to stay and vowed to protect them.
About 300 residents were stranded at the Mandera military camp, waiting to board a plane to the capital following the recent al shabaab attacks on a Nairobi bound bus that targeted non-muslims.Though a delegation of government officials led by the president's chief of staff and head of public service Joseph Kinyua tried to assure them that security in the county would be beefed up, a majority of them were still unconvinced that this reaction would be sustainable.
